TCS-AWS: GSM autonomous weather station

The TCS-AWS weather stations are reliable GSM based autonomous Weather stations, available in various versions to measure various parameters: Wind speed and Direction, Temperature, Relative Humidity, Precipitation.
Real time data can be requested with an SMS or listened through a voice synthesizer, placing a call to the unit.
data can be logged on a 4 Mbit logger or can be sent directly to a server via GPRS UDP packets.

    Features common to all models:

  • Monitoring weather conditions or environmental parameters is paramount for agriculture, sailing, flying and more. How to know weather data from a distant location, without being near the station?
    How to monitor changes in micro climate conditions to spray crops effectively?
    How to know if it is worth driving one hour just to realize that wind conditions are not good for surfing or Flying?
    The answer is a DPS-Promatic TCS-AWS GSM autonomous weather station.
    This station can be used immediately alone, listening to data with a phone call or receiving an SMS with weather information, but it can also be used to build a network of stations to monitor areas of interest with data gathered on a central database and ported to the intenet.     We will provide start providing the basic specifications but If you want to know the real power of this product please read down the bottom.
    Anybody can install and use a TCS-AWS GSM autonomous weather station. We supply all the parts except the pole. You simply need to install a GSM SIM into the TCS board, mount the parts on a pole using the provided parts and the TCS weather station is ready to work.
    Though it has a greater potential, to use its basic functions you simply need to send an SMS message to receive weather data or place a call and listen to a voice reading the same data in real time.

  • To receive and SMS with meteo data, send an SMS with the text #PWD123456#GTM? to our station GSM number (+39-348-2566355, same number as above) and you will receive an SMS with a text similar to the one below:

    It could be that the message is in another language, due to tests we are doing from time to time, but anyway data are the same.
    Please note that some operators don't have SMS agreements so it could happen that you send it but the station never receives it. This happens expecially if you are outside Europe. Calling will always work.



  • More detailed technical specifications and functions
    TCS-AWS CPU acquires data every second and performs calculations on them according to the selectable sampling interval that can be from 2 to 60 minutes, in steps of 2. In the previous versions this value was fixed at 10, so it was possible only to know data of the last 10 minutes. We learned that this doesn't suite everybody so we have made it programmable. You can have the weather data of the last 10 or 20 or 60 minutes (any even value from 2 to 60).
    This are the data measured and computed by TCS-AWS over the chosen sampling interval (from 2 to 60 minutes):
  • Average(1) Wind Speed
  • Wind Speed standard deviation
  • Wind gust that last at least 3 seconds (WMO suggestion)
  • (2)Daily Minimum Wind Speed
  • Daily Maximum Wind gust
  • Average Wind direction, calculated using vector components
  • Wind direction standard deviation
  • Average temperature
  • Daily minimum Temperature
  • Daily maximum Temperature
  • Average Relative Humidity
  • Daily minimum Relative Humidity
  • Daily maximum Relative Humidity
  • Average Dew Point
  • Rain fall for the chosen interval
  • Daily rain fall
  • (3)Last 24 hour rain fall
  • Power supply: External (Solar) or Battery
  • Battery voltage
  • (1)If data are averaged, calculation is done for the sampling interval (i.e. 10,20 minutes etc.).
    (2)Daily data are computed starting from midnight.
    (3)Last 24 hours means 24 hours with 2 minutes aproximation.


    FLASH MEMORY LOG Option:
    with this option, data are stored at programmed intervals (from 2 to 60 minutes) into a flash eprom that can hold about 3 weeks of data, if sampling interval is 10 minutes.
    Data are stored in ASCII format exactly as in the SMS LOG option and can be downloaded with a data call, using any communications software like hyperterminal or using our TCS COMMANDER.

    GPRS log Option
    The same packet of data that is sent by SMS can be alternatively sent as a UDP packet in GPRS mode. This is very convenient because it costs up to 50 times less. The only problem is that you must be capable of building your own application that receives an UDP packet and you must have a fixed IP address to which the TCS-AWS will send the weather data UDP packet in GPRS. WARNING: if you don't know what UDP or GPRS exactly is in technical terms (not salesman) refrain from buying this option.

    If we don't receive any specific request we supply the standard units, that are:

    Upon request when ordering:
  • Speed can be measured in km/h, m/s, Miles/hr, Knots
  • Degrees can be Centigrade or Fahreneit
  • Rainfall can be in mm or in tenth of a inch.
